World class dance company brings elite young dancer and three premieres to the Arsht Center.
RADFORD, Va. (WDBJ) - The Ailey II Dance Company will perform at Radford University Friday, September 26, as part of the University’s Performance Series. Dance has a way of evoking emotion and telling stories through movement. The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre and the Ailey II Dance Company in New York continue this tradition by inviting generations of dancers to share the African American experience with audiences worldwide through modern dance.
Francesca Harper, the artistic director of Ailey II, joins PIX11 to discuss the upcoming Golden Anniversary program at the Joyce Theater celebrating 50 years since the dance company was founded. Harper also brings along dancers from the program to give a preview of the upcoming performance.
This month Ailey II will perform in Rotterdam, at the Holland Dance Festival. Almost all members of the company (named after choreographer Alvin Ailey) are of color. From the moment Van den Heuvel saw these dancers on YouTube, she wanted to be part of them.

Miami ties run deep in the storied New York City-based Ailey II, the second company of the world-renowned Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Ailey luminaries like current artistic director and choreographer, Robert Battle, and 2016 Bessie Award winner, Ailey dancer and choreographer, Jamar Roberts, both hail from Miami. Now in his first year, Ailey II dancer, Andrew Bryant, joins Battle and Roberts in calling both Miami and Ailey’s Manhattan studios “home.”
While attending The Chicago High School for the Arts, Travon M. Williams hoped to eventually join Ailey II, which is billed as The Next Generation of Dance. “When I was in high school, we wrote letters and we couldn’t open them until graduation. In my freshman letter I wrote, ‘I hope you get in to Juilliard or Ailey II.’ Actually I got wait-listed for Juilliard and I’m in Ailey II,” said Williams, who is in his second season with Ailey II.
She tried a number of different sports growing up in Bridgewater, but it was dance and ballet that truly made her feel alive. Now, Bridgewater resident Rachel Yoo has joined Ailey II as a first-year member of the second company to the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.
