Their moves are legendary, and not starting this year you’ll get to celebrate the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater all year round. Destination Dance is a new initiative that will bring programming to some Atlanta’s premiere cultural organizations.
A long-beloved member of the Atlanta community with a 41-year history in the city, Ailey announces programming for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s performances at the Fabulous Fox Theatre February 15 – 19, 2017, as well as for the pilot year of Ailey’s “Destination Dance” partnership initiative in Atlanta. Destination Dance will allow Ailey to better serve the Atlanta community by deepening its commitment to the city’s cultural organizations – including Atlanta Ballet and Atlanta Ballet Centre for Dance Education, AREA, Dance Canvas, ELEVATE, the Fox Theatre, Spelman College, the Center for Civil and Human Rights, Rialto Center for the Arts, and High Museum of Art – through diverse year-round programming, ranging from performances to dance classes to educational programs for students.
Today, Artistic Director Robert Battle announces programming for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s return by popular demand to the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County for five performances from Thursday, February 23 through Sunday, February 26, 2017. In conjunction with his visit home to Miami this week, he is also pleased to share news about the opportunity for local students to attend The Ailey School in New York City, thanks to the establishment of two Ailey Awakening Summer Intensive Scholarships supported by the William R. Kenan, Jr. Charitable Trust.
This Friday, September 16th, Ailey II will embark on a 25-city world tour continuing through March 18th (complete schedule on page two). The tour will take the superb 12-member ensemble to more than 20 cities across the U.S., from Rochester, NY to Kansas City, MO to Honolulu, HI.
December 12, 2016 – On the heels of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s joyous New York City Center holiday season, Artistic Director Emerita Judith Jamison will teach an exclusive Ailey Classics Workshop on Thursday, January 5 at 7:00 p.m. to celebrate what would’ve been Alvin Ailey’s 86th birthday. Ms. Jamison will impart Ailey’s signature style, which changed the perception of American dance around the world, showing audiences that dance can truly be an expression of the spirit.
In conjunction with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s New York City Center season, the Ailey Extension presents workshops taught by acclaimed choreographers and instructors throughout December, as well as special dance fitness events to ring in 2017. From mambo to ballet, these unique workshops and special classes allow novice, intermediate, and professional students to explore techniques and choreography at New York’s largest building dedicated to dance. The Adrienne Arsht Center’s AileyCamp Miami, a free summer program that uses dance as a vehicle for developing self-esteem in young students, on Tuesday received the 2016 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award – the nation’s highest honor for creative youth development programs. Janasia Johnson, 14, of Miami, FL. and a 2016 camper, was at the White House today along with Jairo Ontiveros, the Arsht Center’s Director of Education and Community Engagement, to receive the award from First Lady Michelle Obama on behalf of AileyCamp Miami.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater announces a return to the Fabulous Fox Theatre, February 15 – 19, 2017 as part of a 19-city North American tour that will astound and uplift returning and new audiences alike. The Ailey organization is launching a Young New York program in conjunction with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s annual holiday season at New York City Center (November 30 – December 31). Supported by The Wallace Foundation as part of a multi-year audience development project, the program will engage people between the ages of 21 – 30 through a series of special events and ticket offers.
